Ο Σύλλογος στο Internet

Το διεθνές δίκτυο ηλεκτρονικών υπολογιστών, γνωστό σαν "Internet", είναι ένα δίκτυο το οποίο επιτρέπει στους χρήστες των υπολογιστών να επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους "ηλεκτρονικά" από διαφορετικές τοποθεσίες σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. Ταυτόχρονα επιτρέπει την επικοινωνία με τράπεζες πληροφοριών, φορείς υπηρεσιών, ιδιωτικούς και κυβερνητικούς οργανισμούς και γενικά οποιονδήποτε άλλο φορέα μπορεί κανείς να φανταστεί, εφόσον φυσικά ο φορέας αυτός είναι συνδεδεμένος στο δίκτυο. Η εξεύρεση, ανταλλαγή, παροχή, αγορά και πώληση πληροφοριών και υπηρεσιών μέσω του Internet γίνεται γρήγορα, αποδοτικά και οικονομικά, λόγοι που συνετέλεσαν στην μεγάλη επιτυχία του δικτύου. Μερικές από τις πιο δημοφιλείς εφαρμογές είναι το "ηλεκτρονικό ταχυδρομείο", οι "ηλεκτρονικές βιβλιοθήκες" και οι "ηλεκτρονικές εφημερίδες".

Την τελευταία μεγάλη εξέλιξη στο Internet αποτελεί ο "Ιστός" (Web) ή "Διεθνής Ιστός" (World-Wide Web or WWW) ένα σύστημα επικοινωνίας με δυνατότητα ταυτόχρονης μεταφοράς κειμένου, εικόνας, ήχου, βίντεο, κ.λ.π. Για να μπορέσει ένας χρήστης υπολογιστή να "εξερευνήσει" τον Ιστό πρέπει να διαθέτει: Πρόσφατα ο Σύλλογος Θεσσαλονικέων Μητροπολιτικού Τορόντο απέκτησε την δική του "Ιστοσελίδα" (Home Page) στον Ιστό του Internet. Η ιστοσελίδα του συλλόγου παρέχει πληροφορίες για το ιστορικό, σκοπούς, θέσεις, εκδηλώσεις και εκδόσεις του συλλόγου. Επίσης παρέχει την δυνατότητα απευθείας σύνδεσης με πολλές ιστοσελίδες άλλων οργανισμών, υπηρεσιών, και μέσων μαζικής ενημέρωσης σε όλο τον κόσμο που σχετίζονται με την Θεσσαλονίκη, Μακεδονία, Ελλάδα και τον απόδημο Ελληνισμό. Ιδιαίτερη προσοχή έχει δοθεί στην αισθητική, την λειτουργικότητα και την καθημερινότητα της ιστοσελιδας.

Η διέυθυνση ( Universal Resource Locator or URL ) της ιστοσελίδας του συλλόγου Θεσσαλονικέων είναι:

Προσπάθεια καταβάλεται για την ευρεία διαφήμιση της ιστοσελίδας και του περιεχομένου της. Σαν αποτέλεσμα, ήδη ένας μεγάλος αριθμός επισκεπτών από όλο τον κόσμο ενημερώνεται καθημερινά για τις δραστηριότητες του συλλόγου. Η πρώτη ανοικτή επίδειξη της ιστοσελίδας στο κοινό θα γίνει στις 21 Απριλίου, 1996 στα πλαίσια της εκδήλωσης "Πληροφορική και Εκπαίδευση" που οργανώνεται απο την Ελληνο-Καναδική Ένωση Πανεπιστημιακών του Οντάριο (ΕΚΕΠΟ) στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Τορόντο (5 - 7 μ.μ.. , 35 St. George st., Room 119).

Ο σύλλογος Θεσσαλονικέων άνοιξε ενα παράθυρο στον κόσμο μέσω του Internet. Η ιστοσελίδα είναι η βιτρίνα του συλλόγου για εκατομμύρια χρήστες που καθημερινά κάνουν την βόλτα τους στο Internet

WHITE-WASHED MEMORIES

After the destruction of the sea walls and the eastern fortification in the 1870's1 the White Tower emerged and is still considered as the indisputable symbol of Thessaloniki. Build during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent between 1535 and 1536 AD probably by the famous architect Sinan, the formerly called "Lions Tower" managed soon to shake all bitter memories related to its use as a prison during the 19th century2.

The purification of this fortress is not unrelated to its renaming. The tower became known as the "White Tower" (in Turkish Beyaz Kule) instead of the previous least popular name the "Bloody Tower" (Kanli Kule), related to the numerous tortures and executions which had taken place in its premises during the days of the 1821 Greek revolution. Prof. Apostolos Vakalopoulos maintains - and he is not far from the truth- that the Tower was whitewashed after 1878, on Sultan's instructions, while the name -a euphemism overwhelmingly accepted- prevailed in the 1890's in the context of on-going modernization of the city and the empire.3

It is fortunate and a rather rare coincidence that all the necessary documentation is available to date with precision the adoption of the new name. In 1883, the Sultan happened to read some documents from Thessaloniki in which the name "Bloody Tower" occurred. According to information provided by Sir John Blunt, the always well informed British Consul General, His Majesty at once telegraphed and ordered the local governor, the Vali, to have it changed to "White Tower" instead and to prohibit the further use of the former unpleasant and defamatory name under penalty. The prison was accordingly white-washed and in no more than a year the new name had prevailed entirely, wrote Blunt.4

A prominent British historian, William Miller, who traveled around the Ottoman Empire between 1894 and 1898, witnessed another white-washing of the tower to honour the King of Serbia who visited Thessaloniki in June 1894, in transit to Constantinople.5 According to all testimonies it seems that two white-washings in a decade and the fear of penalty were enough to clean the bloody spilt walls of the tower and in the same time clear all the resentful memories of the citizens.....
