History

The Thessalonikeans Society of Metro Toronto, established in 1960, is a voluntary non-profit association with a membership base affiliated directly or indirectly with the city of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece.

Aims and Goals

The stated aims of the association are:

Significant Activities

Dimitria - Toronto Celebrations (1975-2002)

Annual cultural celebrations scheduled for the last week of October of every year and co-sponsored by the City of Toronto. The events include: formal dances; movie or theatre presentations; academic lectures and art exhibitions.

The Byzantine Heritage Lecture Series (1993-1999)

Academic lectures dealing with topics of Balkan mediaeval history, cosponsored by the General Consulate of Greece and the Greek Canadian Association of Constantinople and in cooperation with the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies.
The Thessalonikeans Society and the Greek Canadian Association of Constantinople also oversee the publication and distribution of these lectures.

Thessaloniki Night (1992-2002)

Annual fundraising event with the purpose of raising funds to promote the study of modern Greek culture politics and history through monetary donations, scholarships or donations in kind to academic institutions of higher education, to libraries, and to students.
